Kitchen Fitting, What's Involved

A kitchen installation is strip-out, first fix, unit fitting, worktops, appliances, tiling, sealing and making good. It is precision work in a room where nothing is square and everything is visible.

The difference between a fitted kitchen and an assembled one is in the scribing, the levels and the joints: doors that line up along the run, a worktop joint you cannot feel, and end panels that sit tight to a bowed wall.

We handle the whole sequence with our own team, priced as one fixed figure so you are not paying a day rate through a two-week job.

Who it's for
Homeowners replacing a tired kitchen, landlords refitting a rental, and anyone who has bought units and wants them fitted properly rather than approximately.
When it's needed
When doors are hanging off, worktops are swollen at the joints or around the sink, the layout wastes the room, or the kitchen is simply at the end of its life.
Why a professional job matters
Levels, scribing, worktop jointing and sealing around wet areas. A unit run that is out by a few millimetres shows along every door gap, and a badly sealed worktop swells and never recovers.

What Happens If It's Left

Nothing outside a house gets cheaper to fix by waiting. Here is how this one escalates.

Water gets into an unsealed worktop

Unsealed cut-outs around a sink or hob swell and blister. Once a laminate top has taken water it cannot be repaired, only replaced.

Out-of-level runs show forever

Doors and drawers that do not line up are the first thing anyone notices in a new kitchen, and they cannot be adjusted out afterwards.

Wrong sequence means rework

Tiling before the worktop, or flooring before the units, means cutting, patching and visible compromises.

An unusable kitchen drags on

Coordinating separate trades yourself means days with no sink, no cooker and no end date.

Common mistakes we're called in to undo

  • Fitting units to a floor or wall without checking level and packing them out.
  • Leaving worktop cut-outs and joints unsealed.
  • Ordering appliances that do not suit the aperture or the services available.
  • Tiling before worktops are in and templated.
  • Accepting a day rate on a job with a lot of fiddly finishing.

Kitchen Fitting in Detail

Materials, methods and the variations we cover across Cardiff, Newport and the wider South Wales area.

Full kitchen installations

Complete strip-out and refit of base and wall units, tall units, islands, doors, drawers, handles, plinths, cornice and end panels, including removal and disposal of the old kitchen.

Worktops

Laminate tops cut, jointed and bolted with mason's mitres where a run turns a corner, sealed at every cut edge and cut-out. Solid surface and stone tops templated and fitted by specialists, with the units set dead level first so the template is right.

Appliances and services

Ovens, hobs, extractors, integrated fridges, dishwashers and washing machines fitted into the correct apertures, with waste, supply and power set out during first fix.

Walls, floors and levels

Old kitchens hide uneven floors and bowed walls. Units are packed and scribed rather than forced, and floors levelled where a new covering needs it.

Tiling and splashbacks

Ceramic, porcelain, metro and large-format splashbacks set out so cuts land where they are least visible, with sealing at the worktop junction.

Rentals and small kitchens

Hard-wearing, easily maintained specifications for rental turnarounds, and careful set-out in galley and small kitchens where every unit width counts.

Where we carry out this work

We work from Crumlin Drive in St Mellons across Cardiff, Newport, St Mellons, Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly, Penarth and the surrounding South Wales area. See the areas we cover, browse all of our services or head back to the MB Construction homepage.

Kitchen Fitting, Common Questions

How much does kitchen fitting cost?

It depends on the number of units, worktop material, appliances, tiling and whether services are moving. We measure on site and give you a free fixed written price.

How long does a kitchen take to fit?

Most kitchens run over one to two weeks from strip-out to finishing, depending on size and how much moves. Your quote sets out the programme.

Can I buy the kitchen myself?

Yes. Many customers buy their units and we fit them. Have everything delivered and checked before the start date.

Will I be without a kitchen?

There is a period without a sink and cooker. We tell you at the site visit roughly how long that window is so you can plan around it.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

First and second fix work is handled as part of the installation. Anything requiring certification is carried out by the appropriately qualified person.

Can you change the layout?

Yes, within what the services and structure allow. We will tell you on the visit what is straightforward and what will add cost.

Is the work guaranteed?

Our workmanship carries a 10-year guarantee and we hold full insurance.

Are your quotes really free?

Yes. We come out, look at the job properly and put a fixed price in writing. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to go ahead.

Do you charge a day rate?

No. Every job is quoted as a fixed price. The figure you agree is the figure you pay, whether the work runs quicker or slower than we expected.

Is the work guaranteed and are you insured?

All of our work carries a 10-year workmanship guarantee, and we hold both public liability and employer's liability insurance. Ask to see the documents before work starts and you will get them.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based on Crumlin Drive in St Mellons and work across Cardiff, Newport, the Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly, Penarth and the surrounding South Wales area.
